Wednesday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time
(I Timothy 3:16-18; Luke 7:31-35)
In today’s first reading St. Paul gives an inkling of life
in the first century. Transportation
then was unequivocally erratic. He could
not say when or if he would be able to visit Timothy in Ephesus. For this reason, he offers written instructions
on how to carry out the work of the Church.
The second part of the reading presents Paul’s motive for giving
advice. Jesus Christ is the mystery of
God who deserves our finest conduct. He
became human and was unwarrantedly condemned to death. He was resurrected by the Spirit and proclaimed
throughout the world. Now he lives in
glory with the Father.
Today we have GPS to predict the minute of arrival at our
destination. But we still need help to
live according to the will of Christ. Our
rebellious hearts want to do things according to our fancy. For this reason the Church continues to send
us instructions on liturgy and morality.
