Friday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time
(Ephesians 4:1-6; Luke 12:54-59)
In today’s gospel Jesus chastises the crowds following
him. He calls them “hypocrites.” He notes how cleverly they determine the
weather that God sends their way. Yet
they pretend not to know what God expects of them in their daily lives.
God expects them to repent of their sins and believe His
prophets, such as Jesus. Through his
marvelous deeds and his cogent preaching, Jesus has revealed the Kingdom of God. Now is the time for the people to respond. Eternal glory awaits if they overcome
preoccupation with personal difficulties.
Many years later we too face the challenge of Jesus. Now is the time to turn away from self-centeredness
and to live for God. He will not
disappoint. For now we have Christ’s body,
the Church, to support our need of moral and spiritual support. At our life’s end we will have the happiness
of the Kingdom in its fullness.
